Freuds’ most important painting at Christie’s

Christie’s will put up for auction the most important painting, Lucian Freud ever made: at May 13th in New York. Freud (85), grandson of the famous Viennese psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, painted ‘Benefits Supervisor Sleeping’ in 1995. The work will be expected to bring in between 15 and 22 million euro. Freuds’ painting is exhibited from April 11th for three days onwards in London; after that it will be transported to New York. Right now, the Dutch museum ‘Gemeentemuseum’ in The Hague is showing a summary exhibiton of Lucian Freud until June 8th.

The painting at auction is depicting model Sue Tilly, who works at the office in daytime and is better known as ‘Big Sue’ in the London nightlife.  The work (151x219cm) might bring in an all time record for a work of a living artist at Christie’s. So far this record was held by Jeff Koons: his painting ‘Hanging Herat’ brought in almost 24 million dollar. (update 14/05: the work has been sold for more than 30 million dollar).
